1. Review your reports
Credit repair starts with pulling your reports from all three bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Each one can hold different information, so you need to see all three to know what you're working with.
2. Find what's hurting you
Look for late payments, collections, high balances — and mistakes. Accounts that aren't yours, wrong dates, and incorrect balances are more common than you'd think.
3. Dispute inaccurate items
You have the legal right to dispute anything inaccurate. The bureaus generally have 30 days to investigate and must remove items they can't verify.
4. Build positive history
While disputes work through the system, you add good history: on-time payments, low balances, and accounts that report your progress every month.
